The Ultimate Guide to Dental Implant Types
If you have missing teeth, dental implants can help you restore your smile and confidence with results that look and feel natural. This page outlines our dental implant process at Dental & TMJ Specialists of Greater DC, serving patients throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virigina. Read more to learn more about what dental implants are, what dental implants can be used for, and what to expect at each stage of treatment at our practice.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are designed to replace missing teeth from the root up, making them one of the most secure and long-lasting solutions in modern dentistry. Each implant is a small titanium post that is placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial root. They are very biocompatible and bond to your bone through a process called osseointegration. Once the implant bonds with your bone, a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is attached, completing your new smile.

What can Dental Implants be Used for?
Single Tooth Implants
If you are missing one tooth, a single implant with a dental crown is often the best option. It looks and feels like your natural tooth and prevents surrounding teeth from shifting out of place.
Immediate Implant Placement & Temporary Crown (“Same-Day Tooth Replacement”)
In certain situations—especially for front teeth—a severely damaged tooth can be removed, an implant placed, and a temporary crown provided all in the same visit! This approach reduces appointments, surgeries, treatment time, and allows you to maintain your appearance during healing. While not every patient is a candidate, we carefully evaluate bone quality, gum health, and bite to determine if an immediate implant is right for you.
Implant-supported Bridges
When several teeth in a row are missing, implant supported bridges provide a strong and lasting solution. Unlike traditional bridges, they don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support, protecting healthy natural teeth from unnecessary wear.
Full Arch, All-on-4, “Teeth in a Day” Implants
For patients missing most or all their teeth, full arch restoration connects a full set of teeth to a few strategically placed implants along the jaw. This approach provides stability, function, and a beautifully natural appearance without the need for removable dentures.
What to Expect During the Dental Implant Process
At Dental & TMJ Specialists of Greater DC, implant treatment is never rushed or one-size-fits-all. From your first visit to your final restoration, every step is carefully planned to ensure precision, comfort, and long-term success.
Advanced 3D Imaging and Digital Records
Treatment begins with comprehensive diagnostics, including CBCT (3D imaging), digital intraoral scans, and clinical photographs. These records allow us to fully evaluate bone quality, anatomical structures, bite relationships, and esthetics before any treatment begins.
Prosthetically Driven Implant Planning by Board-Certified Specialists

Implant planning is completed by our board-certified prosthodontists and periodontists, using advanced digital software to design the final crown or prosthesis first. From there, we work backward to determine the ideal implant position. This prosthetically driven approach ensures implants are placed to support optimal esthetics, function, and longevity—not simply where bone is available.
Precision-Guided Implant Surgery
Once planning is finalized, we fabricate custom 3D-printed surgical guides in our in-house laboratory. These guides allow the surgical plan to be transferred precisely to the mouth, ensuring implants are placed exactly as designed. Implant surgery is performed by our board-certified periodontist. Guided surgery improves accuracy, minimizes surgical variability, and supports smoother healing.
Dental Implant Recovery and Healing Time
Recovery time varies depending on the type of implant treatment and each patient’s individual healing response. Most patients experience mild swelling or tenderness for a few days, which can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. During the healing phase, the dental implant integrates with the jawbone—a critical process known as osseointegration—which typically takes several months and forms the foundation for long-term success.
Final Dental Implant Restoration
After healing is complete, the final restoration process begins. Custom crowns or prostheses are designed to harmonize with your smile, bite, and facial features. Every restoration is fabricated with the same attention to detail that guided the planning and surgical phases.
