Dental bridges are one of the ways we help our patients replace missing teeth. A bridge fills the open space left by a missing tooth using a natural-looking replacement that’s supported by neighboring teeth or dental implants. For many patients, bridges offer a secure, non-removable option that feels stable and familiar!

Why Treating Missing Teeth Early Matters

When a tooth is missing, changes can start happening sooner than you might expect. Neighboring teeth can shift, the bite can become uneven, and the jawbone in that area can gradually lose density. The longer a space is left untreated, the more complex treatment can become.

Addressing missing teeth early with a dental bridge can:

  • Help preserve your bite and jaw alignment
  • Maintain the position of the remaining adjacent teeth
  • Limit bone and gum changes in the area
  • Keep treatment options simpler and more predictable
  • Reduce the number of teeth or treatments needed

By restoring the space early, we’re often able to protect your long-term oral health and help you avoid more extensive procedures down the road.

Improving Chewing Comfort And Speech

Missing teeth can make everyday activities—like eating and speaking—feel awkward or frustrating. By replacing the missing tooth, a dental bridge helps restore function back to normal.

Patients often tell us they notice:

  • Greater comfort and ability to chew a wider variety of foods
  • Clearer, more confident speech
  • Less strain or discomfort in the jaw

Supporting Facial Shape and A Natural Looking Smile

Teeth do more than help you chew. They also help support your lips and cheeks. When teeth are missing, the face can sometimes look more sunken or aged. A dental bridge replaces those missing teeth, so your lips and cheeks are properly supported giving a fuller and balanced appearance.

At Dental & TMJ Specialists of Greater DC, we custom design each bridge to match the shape and shade of your natural teeth. Our goal is for your bridge to blend seamlessly—so it looks and feels like it’s always been part of your smile.

Tooth-Supported Bridges vs. Implant-Supported Bridges

Tooth-Supported Dental Bridges

A traditional dental bridge is supported by the natural teeth on either side of the missing space. These teeth are carefully reshaped to hold the bridge securely in place. Tooth-supported bridges are a great option when neighboring teeth already need restorations or when dental implants aren’t the right choice. Treatment usually involves a few visits, including impressions and a temporary bridge while the final restoration is being crafted.

Implant-Supported Dental Bridges

An implant-supported bridge uses dental implants placed in the jawbone to support the replacement teeth, rather than relying on neighboring natural teeth. This option can help preserve the surrounding bone. Implant bridges are often recommended when multiple teeth are missing or when we want to avoid altering healthy teeth. Treatment typically takes place in stages to allow the implants to fully heal and integrate with your bone before the final bridge is placed.
