Dental Cleanings and General Dentistry
General dentistry encompasses a broad range of routine dental services that focus on preventing, diagnosing, and treating common dental conditions. A key part of general dentistry is dental cleanings, which help maintain good dental health and overall well-being.
About Regular Dental Hygiene Cleanings
Regular dental cleanings are an important part of preventive care and maintaining long-term oral health. During a professional cleaning, a dental hygienist uses specialized tools to remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing alone may not remove. Regular visits also allow the dental team to assess tooth and gum health, identify potential oral health issues, and provide personalized recommendations based on each patient’s needs.

What Is a Dental Exam?
A dental exam is a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth, gums, and overall oral health. During an exam, our doctors assess your mouth for signs of tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, infections, and other oral health issues that may need attention. Depending on your oral health needs, the exam may include digital X-rays to evaluate areas not visible during a visual exam. Regular dental exams also support early detection, helping identify and address potential concerns before they develop into more significant problems. Your dentist will discuss the findings with you and recommend appropriate preventive care or treatment based on your oral health.
Our Registered Dental Hygienists (RDH)
Our Registered Dental Hygienists (RDHs) have significant responsibilities focused on our patients’ total oral health and care. As RDHs, they have completed the required education and training and passed the examinations mandated by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners. They are experts in oral hygiene education, including the preventive and ongoing maintenance needed for optimal oral health, and they are also specially trained in our office to treat patients with dental implants, TMJ issues, or head & neck cancer. They are also trained in these specialized areas and have the equipment and materials needed to treat them.
What Are the Benefits of Regular Dental Hygiene Cleanings?
Regular dental cleanings help maintain a healthy smile and overall health. Some major benefits include the following.
Prevent Cavities: The whitish film that builds up on the teeth is called plaque. Bacteria in plaque cause tooth decay. The acid the bacteria produce weakens tooth enamel and, if left untreated, can lead to cavities. You can remove plaque with brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings. Our registered dental hygienists are highly skilled at helping patients build good oral hygiene habits at home.
Stop Tooth Loss: Gum disease starts with a build-up of plaque (causing inflammation of the gums), called gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, a major cause of tooth loss in adults.
A Brighter Smile: Certain foods and beverages can stain teeth, as can smoking and vaping. Regular dental cleanings can remove built-up stains, resulting in a whiter, brighter smile!
Fresh Breath: Good oral hygiene is the best way to prevent persistent bad breath. Daily flossing and brushing, combined with regular dental cleanings, are a great way to keep the patient’s mouth healthy and odor-free.
Heart Disease, Diabetes, and Other Health Issues: Research shows clear links between oral disease and major health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and more, so to stay healthy, you need a healthy, clean mouth.
What Happens at a Dental Oral Hygiene Cleaning?
A dental oral hygiene cleaning involves several steps to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Typically, you can expect the following at your regular cleaning appointment:
- Review the patient’s health history.
- Perform an oral cancer screening and head and neck cancer screening.
- Record any diseases or abnormalities.
- Examine the patient’s teeth and gums.
- Provide a patient tutorial on practicing good oral hygiene at home.
- Remove soft and hard deposits from teeth.
- Oral Hygiene Education and Tutorial.
- Discuss the importance of good nutrition and its impact on oral health.
Dental Hygiene for TMJ Patients
Hygiene for TMJ patients requires extra time, skill, care, and equipment to provide the best results. Our hygienists have extensive advanced training, education, and experience to provide optimal care for patients with orofacial pain and TMJ. At the end of the hygiene appointment, our doctors will meet with the patient to review any questionable areas the hygienist detected.
Preventative Oral Cancer Screening
Oral Cancer affects more people nationwide than either cervical or skin (melanoma) cancer. It used to be that most oral cancers were found in people who used tobacco and/or drank alcohol excessively. However, that is no longer the case. Many oral cancers occur in people who have no risk factors at all. Recent medical studies indicate that human papillomavirus disease (HPV) can be linked with oral cancer.
During a regular dental check-up or hygiene appointment, our doctors will examine the mouth to ensure there are no symptoms of oral cancer. Two dental visits per year are generally recommended; however, if you notice any unusual changes in your mouth, call our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
